HGSCA announced that its efforts in reactivating the bilateral relationship between the Houston Fire Department (HFD) and the Guayaquil Fire Department (BCBG) has been fruitful. In December, a BCBG delegation is expected to arrive in Houston as a courtesy visit to the HFD to explore knowledge and humanitarian exchange opportunities.

HFD is the third largest fire department in the United States and is responsible for preserving life and property to a population of more than 2 million in an area totaling 654 square miles. As part of its mission, the HFD has positioned itself as an efficient public safety provider in the world, Therefore, HGSCA is thankful that the sister city relationship has led to generate such important humanitarian exchange opportunities.

The HFD is currently exploring ways to collaborate and support the Guayaquil Fire Department trough donations and training. In addition, the BCBG expressed its intention to aid other fire department in its region as collateral benefit.

Houston Council Member Robert Gallegos, who is also member of the HGSCA Advisory Board and a champion for working families, seniors, citizens with disabilities, and for issues of importance to immigrant communities, Chief Samuel Pena, who leads the HFD, and Chief Martin Cucalon, who leads the BCBG, were key players in connecting our fire departments. They support our sister city program and believe in its mission to use citizen diplomacy to promote peace and goodwill between our communities.

We also recognize HFD Richard Galvan, George Salcedo and other members who are constantly helping and encouraging our mission as well as former HGSCA President, Elizabeth Quila-Hussmann, and Ex. HFD Captain, Homero Ponce, who are and have provided advice and guidance through this process .
