After listening to the success of the "Connecting Universities Program" between Houston and Guayaquil, Dr. Danika Burgess, Director of Curriculum and Fellowships Center for Civic Leadership at Rice University, contacted HGSCA to brainstorm on how students from Rice University could access programs that would allow them to apply their skills in real-world situations by creating programs, shadowing professionals, or participating in civic engagement.

As a result, HGSCA connected Rice University to Dr. Jorge Duchicela who founded Cachamsi, a nonprofit medical immersion institute, to help health professionals learn Spanish to better communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients and learn global and cross-cultural medicine. The program places health professionals in the community of Cacha, Ecuador, and requires a combination of a language acquisition methodology and a strong clinical component that makes the medical education venture very effective and efficient for students pursuing a Health Career, medical students, residents, and practicing physicians. Students will have the opportunity to shadow various physicians among different hospitals and clinics in Riobamba.

The program serves Health students and professionals, but is flexible and can adapt to other professions. Students from all over the world arrive to Cachamsi every year.

"Experience Cachamsi" is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to develop skills and characteristics that are key to Health Professionals and others alike.
