HGSCA is pleased to announce the appointment of Homero Ponce-Lopez ras its new Director of Public Relations This is one of several new key appointments to the organization’s leadership team.
Homero Ponce-Lopez worked for the City of Houston Fire Department for over 31 years. At the age of 21 he started as a Firefighter at Station 23 and in 2004 Homero was promoted to the rank of Captain. He worked at the 9-1-1 Center, then he was assigned to Fire Station 40 as a Captain. In the last 7 years before retirement, he was assigned to the HFD Public Affairs Office as a Manager and Public Information Officer.
As a Public Information Officer, he was primarily responsible for assisting media responding to fire incidents as well as
Collected and updated information from incidents. Conducted interviews for television, radio and newspapers, in both English and Spanish.
Supported community events and activities to promote fire station operations and answer citizen questions. Coordinated autograph / photo events with professional athletes from Astros, Rockets and Texans sports teams.
Did live interviews with local television stations during multiple alarm fires.
Represented the Houston Fire Department in public events and addressed community leaders
Spanish Spokesperson for several years was the only Spanish Speaking PIO for HFD.
Coordinated involvement with sister cities in Ecuador, Mexico and Pakistan, which included firefighter training. Coordinated the donation of surplus equipment to Houston Sisters Cities.
Recruited firefighters on an ongoing basis through job fairs and high school events, seeking all demographics with focus on women and minorities to enhance cultural diversity.

Presented Public Safety Information to civic clubs, schools, and community leaders.
He also became the Houston Fire Department Public Affairs Office Manager. Homero retired as a Captain in February 2011 and is presently working in the City of Houston Public Safety and Homeland Division as a CERT Coordinator and acted as the Hispanic Affairs Liaison (2004-2011). Served as the primary contact for Hispanic community in the greater city of Houston.
