"Guayaquil is not only the beating commercial heart of Ecuador but is a vibrant sprawling city growing ever more confident. A half-dozen or more high-rises give it a big-city profile and several hillsides are engulfed by shantytowns, but it’s the Rio Guayas’ malecón (the city’s riverfront town square–eatery-playground) that defines the city’s identity.
The picturesque "barrio Las Peñas" perches over the river, anchors the city both geographically and historically, while the principal avenue "9 de Octubre" is full of office workers, residents and shoppers. Amid revitalized squares, parks and massive urban-renewal projects, the city's theater, film and arts programs have grown fueled in part by several large universities."
During October, the celebration of the Independence of Guayaquil features many artistic and cultural endeavors in city of Guayaquil, which is now called “The Pearl of the Pacific”. A citywide party is held yearly in Guayaquil to celebrate Independence Day.
